Presidential Speech
Stossel in the Classroom Contest ‘24
What changes would you like to see in America? As a citizen and potential presidential candidate, I would like to see equal opportunity for all Americans. The border is a big problem too. We need to address both of these issues with good laws. For example, if the debt ceiling were properly addressed we could help with equal opportunity and immigration. Many people are afraid of change, but we are in constant change. Many of the other candidates are trying to preserve this world we have, but we should try to make this world a better place. My grandparents were immigrants from Korea. They worked hard here and in the end succeeded. I want this to be true for all Americans. Afterall, American history is built on immigrants. We could save people’s lives, stabilize our economy, and most importantly make the American dream a reality for every single citizen.
We have all been told that America is the land of opportunity, but many people are being exploited for their labor. Everyone deserves to succeed and grow their wealth, but the rich become richer and the poor become poorer, and we need to change that. Race and gender have become tools for denying people good jobs and access to things like housing and healthcare. Yet as a country, we are not doing nearly enough to push for this to change.
An example of this is shown in many communities around America, where people are separated by race and class. The differences in how people live are reflective of our country’s divide between rich and poor, where people in lower-class communities are discriminated against and not given the same opportunities elsewhere. The typical black worker earns 24.4% less per hour than the white worker. The average woman earns 16% less than their male peers. These workers are being exploited for their work and paid less for their services. I will change that by pushing for better equality in the workplace, medication, and housing.
Some people blame immigration for slowing down our economy and denying people opportunities. However, immigration is a good thing; It helps our economy and most people who immigrate to America come from places that threaten their lives. People might say that immigrants bring crime and violence. But statistics show that immigrants are less likely to commit serious crimes or be behind bars. People think that immigration hurts the country, but immigration strengthens it. A common misconception about immigration is that it takes away the jobs of existing workers. They don’t steal our jobs, there is no evidence of this. We see a person lose their job but eventually, a job is created for them and it is an overall increase to our economy. Immigration does not depress anyone's wages; there is no evidence of that. The only wage depression that economists find is when people do not have a high school diploma. And the negative effect is very small. There are also many people waiting at the border to come into America. I will address this by proposing new laws to ensure a healthy number of immigrants based on the growth of the economy to come into our country. We could also try to have an open border where you can go in and out whenever you want with a special license. The border where screening starts would be 50 miles into the country. To get past you would need to go through the regular immigrant process. But we need to be firm in making sure thousands of people don’t get stuck at the border with nowhere to go. Think about the lives we could save if we made better laws.
We have all heard that America is going broke, but is that true? No that is not true, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't happen. We do need to address this issue or else it could get out of hand. The debt right now is over 34 trillion. We will need to cut down spending to match the cost of inflation and the growth of the economy. You might think we’ll just print more money, but printing more money is insufficient to cover the national debt. A prime example of that is Zimbabwe. As the economy started to collapse the government started to print more money and because there were so many bills in commission the currency collapsed and is now worthless. But we are not going to face a failing currency the next morning. Debt money is useless, it has to be seen as a ratio to the economy. Deficit spending grows the economy when unemployment and underemployment are high. Take a look at Greece; they cut spending and the economy grew smaller leading to a worse debt problem. Solving our debt problem could help with equal opportunity and border control. We should decide on a budget that matches the growth of the economy. When the economy is strong we can focus more on making a great border policy. We can also focus on more opportunities for people. This will ensure that everyone will gain the services and opportunities they need.
Everything points toward change. We need to take control of the border to make it better and equal opportunity for all people no matter what they believe in. That all starts with making sure our currency stays strong so that we can make these things happen. So, let's work to save people’s lives, stabilize our economy, and most importantly preserve the American dream for all.
